Short Term Car
Insurance Saved My Brother's Life
I have always kept up with my auto
insurance payments, as I do with all of my bills. My brother, however,
is a different story. I truly think he has the only negative credit
score on record. And he is not a bad guy; he just, well, you know how
different people have different talents? Well his talent is not staying
employed. And his stints of unemployment always seem to come about the
same time every year, the holidays. Fortunately that is when the family
gets together at my mom's house for many, many celebrations.
Unfortunately, the holiday season is also the time for the most traffic
around our city, which we learned last year was not something that we
want to put our brother in.
Since he's too old to go on anyone else's car insurance, we just kind of
trusted him last year to go and get the egg nog mix for the Christmas
party. Well, four things came back half full: the whiskey bottle, the
egg nog carton, my brother's stomach from drinking said beverages, and
the front seat of my mom's Mercedes. The car was full of debris from the
accident that my brother got into on his drunken way back from the
store.
We did not have any type of car insurance that allowed my brother to
drive the car, so the family got stuck with the repairs. Luckily, my
brother was not harmed, because if he had been, all of his medical bills
would have had to come out of pocket. So this year, after his license
suspension on his DUI conviction ran out, we decided to give him another
chance. He was, after all, unemployed yet again, and the only person not
contributing financially to the expenses of the party. This time,
however, we made him take the last of his money and get a short term
insurance policy on himself for the months that he would be staying at
my mom's house.

Sure enough, my brother found
occasion to get into an accident again while driving out on errands for
the family. We had crossed any sort of alcohol off the grocery list, so
at least he didn't get another DUI. However, an accident is an accident,
and wouldn't you know it - he had it in the exact same car. However,
this time, the short term insurance covered all expenses minus the
deductible, and my brother didn't ruin Christmas this year.
What's funny out of all this, however, is now my brother is hitting me
up to borrow the amount of the deductible, because apparently, that was
the money for his plane ticket home. Though he is family, and though we
all love him, we had had just about enough of his antics this year. (We
all seem to run out of patience for him around the same time every year
- January 3rd. Little wonder that this is the time that we all have to
go back into the real world.) The family chipped in, got him the money,
and sent him on his way. I can't wait until next year, when we will
definitely be taking out short term insurance on him again, just to make
sure.
